About Washington State University

Also known as WSU and usually pronounced Wazzu, the Washington State University is located in Pullman, Washington and it was founded in March 1890. In 1989 there were another 3 branch campuses opened in Washington area, where the university is active. These are WSU Spokane, WSU Vancouver and WSU Tri-Cities. The university’s athletic teams are called the Cougars and they’re playing in Division I. Their colors are crimson and gray and the Cougars compete in the Pacific-10 Conference.

Did you know?

The Victory Bell was first placed in the center of the campus and used in the late 1800s to announce the start and the end of a class. After that, it was mounted on the top of Old College Hall and then on Bryan Hall. Nowadays, the bell rings each time a football team wins and only G and C keys are rung for "Go Cougs!"

WSU’s mascot is "Butch T. Cougar" and it’s logo was created by one of the university’s alumni, Randall Johnson, in 1936. Its name is given after Herbert Meeker, a former student of Washington State University who became the star of the team.

The university’s nickname is Wazzu, which now is becoming more and more absent from the Cougar uniforms and printed materials around the university. The term’s use has been reduced significantly since 2002 because it was considered to have a negative connotation on the university’s reputation.

One of the most famous alumni of WSU is Paul Allen, a philanthropist, owner of the Seattle Seahawks and the Portland Trailblazers and co-founder of Microsoft.

WSU houses the only facility in the world where adult grizzlies are brought for research. It is called WSU Bear Program and it houses ten bears.
